A birthday invitation says five things: whose party it is, when, where, when to reply by and who to tell about allergies. The printable invitations have a spot ready for each one. Four invitations fit on one sheet, in two designs.

The invitations

The invitations on the first page have balloons, the second page has stars. Both have room for your child's own drawing or a sticker. Cut the invitations out along the border lines. Thicker paper makes them feel like real cards.

What goes in a birthday invitation?

  • Whose party: the birthday child's name and the age they're turning
  • When: the date and the start and end time, for example Saturday, November 14, 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Where: the address and, if needed, a door code or directions
  • Reply by: a date and the phone number to reply to
  • Allergies: a request to mention any food allergies in the reply

If the party has a theme or outdoor games, say so in the invitation. Then guests know how to dress.

Ready-made invitation wording

Pick the wording that suits your party and write it on the invitation.

  • "Come to Ella's 6th birthday party! Expect games, cake and lots of laughs."
  • "Otto is turning 4 and wants to celebrate with you. Come join us!"
  • "The treasure hunt begins! Come to Eetu's 8th birthday. Dress for outdoor play."
  • "Pajama party! Come to Sanni's 10th birthday. Bring your own pillow."

When to send the invitations?

Two to three weeks before the party is a good time. Families' weekends fill up fast. Ask for replies a week before the party, so you have time to plan the food.

At daycare and school, hand the invitations to the parent or put them in the backpack in an envelope. That way no one sees who got an invitation and who didn't.

Paper invitation or a message?

A message to the parent is quick, and the reply comes easily. A paper invitation is the child's own thing: they can decorate it and hand it to a friend. Many families do both: an invitation for the child and a message with the same details for the parent.
